Growing Ylang Ylang

Ylang ylang grows natively in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, where it thrives in warm, sunny, humid conditions. Ylang ylang trees are fast-growing evergreen trees that typically reach a height of about 12 meters, although some can grow upwards of 42 meters. When grown for essential oil production, many of the trees are pruned to stay shorter so their flowers are easily accessible. Ylang ylang essential oil comes from the bright, fragrant flowers with trailing petals the tree produces.

The History of Ylang Ylang

Ylang ylang first became known in the 1600s and grew in popularity across Europe. It began being cultivated on the island of Reunion in the 1700s when it was mainly used in hair and beauty products. Ylang ylang then began being commercially produced in Manila in the 1800s, and by the 1900s, was also cultivated on the islands of Comoros and Madagascar. During this time, ylang ylang was used for many medicinal purposes and for its relaxing properties. In 1920, ylang ylang was used to make Chanel No. 5, one of the most famous perfumes of all time, and it is now one of the main ingredients of the perfume industry.
